Mrs. Barnie Mae Johnson Porter, 100 years old, of Glennville, Ga. passed away Saturday, May 1, 2010 at her residence. She is the daughter of the late Mr. Miles Bradley and Mrs. Henrietta Rivers Johnson. She was born on March 29, 1910 in Wadmalaw Island, S. C. She was one of nine children and moved to Georgia in 1933 met and married (who proceed her in death) Robert O'Neal Porter of this union four children were born.
She attended high school at the Avery Institute in Charleston, South Carolina . She is a graduate of Savannah State College and Atlanta University receiving a masters. She was and Educator in the Long County School System for 46 years until her retirement. During this time she was dedicated to serving God as an ardent and devoted member of St. James A.M.E. Church serving as Sunday School Teacher, Steward Board member, Missionary Board member, Church Trustee and Church Secretary. She is also member of the Order of the Eastern Star #162 in Glennville, Ga.She is survived by her children: Robert M. Porter of Savannah, Ga., Mrs. Doris Peggie Warren of Ladson, S.C., Mrs. Laure P. Stephens of Atlanta, Ga., Albert O'Neal Porter of Glennville, Ga., Mrs. Afreida Johnson Jackson of Wadmalaw Island, S.C. , Lonnie Johnson and Dwight Washington both of Glennville, Ga. One sister Mrs. Harriett Brown of New York, N.Y. , sister-in-law Mrs. Ollie Mae Porter of Glennville, Ga. and a host of grandchildren other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 11:00am at St. James A.M.E. Church in Glennville, Ga with burial in the Sandhill Cemetery.
The wake ceremony will be held Friday, May 7, 2010 at St. James A.M.E. Church in Glennville, Ga. from 6:45 - 8:00pm
