Eugene Allen

July 10, 1947 — February 4, 2020

On February 4, 2020, Mr. Eugene Allen departed this life at Memorial Health Hospital in Savannah, Georgia. He was born July 10, 1947 to the late Dr. Willie E. King and Catherine Allen in Jeff Davis County, Georgia. He graduated from Hazlehurst High School. He was joined in holy matrimony on July 5, 1966 to Jewell L. Wright. To this union two children were born, Zaret and Destiny. Eugene joined Elizabeth Baptist Church in Hazlehurst, Georgia at an early age. Later he became a member of Disciples of Christ Church in Hazlehurst, Georgia under the leadership of Apostle Cortez and Elect Lady Eady. He became the Senior Deacon and later received Christian Ministry license to preach and teach the gospel on August 6, 2017. Over the years, he was a dedicated employee for American Steel Doors, Glennville Lingerie Hazlehurst Division, Bank of Hazlehurst, City of Hazlehurst, and Jeff Davis County Schools. Eugene wore many titles including being the first African-American City Councilman in Hazlehurst and Mayor Pro Tem. He was a member of the Hazlehurst Men Civic and Social Club. He was a man that loved God, his family, his community, and checkers. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, Moses Allen, Ethel Thomas, Esker King, Eula Bennett; great-grandparents, George and Margaret Kennedy; uncles, Marshall (Eula) Pryor, Reverend Enoch (Carrie Mae) Allen, Charles Thomas, and Eugene Allen; aunts, Mozell Walker, Barbara Anderson Allen, Sarah Cloggins, and Lela Mae Brenim; sister, Joyce Brown; sister-in-law, Mary Alice Jones; brothers-in-law, George Moore, Willie E. Wright, and Clyde Beauchamp; special brother/cousin, John Allen and special sister/cousin, Christine Allen McCoy. Mr. Allen's immediate survivors are his loving wife of 53 years, Jewell Allen; son Zaret (Sarah) Allen and daughter Destiny (Jeffery) Allen, both of Hazlehurst, GA; brothers: Leotis (Marie) Bloodworth of Savannah, GA, Charles Anthony Brown of Seattle, Washington, David Bonner of Detroit, Michigan and special brother/cousin Larry (Helen) Allen of Hazlehurst, GA; sisters: Vernester Beachamp and Diane King McDonald both of Detroit, MI and special sisters/cousins, Alice Allen of Buffalo, NY, Rosie (Charles) Jackson of Lithonia, GA Odessa Clark and Sherrie (Clayton) Horne of Hazlehurst, GA; grandchildren: Vanessa Guy of Middletown, OH, Andrew Allen and Adrien Allen, both of Hazlehurst, GA; great-grandchild, Za'Viere Gearheart of Middletown, OH; uncle, Moses (Mildred) All of Ft. Pierce, FL; brothers-in-law: Wallace Jones of Atlanta, GA and Lee Wright, of Dublin, GA, Walter (Shirley) Wright, Jr. and Jerome (Aretha) Wright, both of Hazlehurst, GA, Joe (Shirley) Wright of San Antonio, TX and James Wright of Atlanta, GA; sisters-in-law: Vickie Wright of Valdosta, GA, Betty Moore and Josie Williams, both of Hazlehurst, GA; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
