Nellie Mae Conaway

May 26, 1939 — September 25, 2022

Nellie Mae Clemons Conaway, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, was born on May 26, 1939 to the late Buster and Easter Clemons.

Nellie was hard worker. She labored in the cotton and tobacco fields. She was employed at the Hazlehurst Slip Factory and she retired from Hazlehurst Mills. She enjoyed picking up cans and dog tongue/deer tongue. Some of her favorite pastimes were gardening, growing cane, and making syrup. Nellie loved the Lord with all her heart and talked about His goodness all the time. She was a faithful and dedicated member of Macedonia Baptist Church for several years. She dutifully served as the Church Mother.

Nellie was united in holy matrimony on September 6, 1960 to Yarp Conaway, Sr. To this beautiful union nine children were born, Cathy, Tommy, Alvin, Teresa, Yarp, Jr., Janice, Marvin, Mitchell, and Romanski.

Nellie answered the Lord's call on September 25, 2022. She was preceded in death by her four children, Cathy Newkirk, Tommy Newkirk, Jr., Alvin Conaway, and Yarp Conaway, Jr.

Nellie leaves wonderful memories to be cherished by her husband of 62 years, Yarp Conaway, Sr; two daughters: Teresa Byrd (Kenneth) and Janice Phillips (James); three sons: Mitchell Conaway (Felicia), Marvin Conaway, and Romanski Conaway (Teshia); grandson she raised as her own, Kenric Newkirk (Erica); two sisters: Bertha Hill and Rena Mae Frazier; one brother, Lenard Clemons; two daughters-in-law: Linda Newkirk and Carrie Conaway; two sisters-in-law: Bessie Conaway and Josephine Walker.
